Overview:
This 90-minute session will explore the complexities of managing diabetes in older adults, with a particular emphasis on hypoglycemia and its impact on treatment strategies.

The webinar will begin with a presentation covering key considerations such as:
  • Goals of therapy in older adults
  • The role of Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)
  • Navigating polypharmacy and concurrent medication use, including beta blockers and weight loss medications
  • The importance of diabetic education
  • Resources and guidelines to inform and guide therapy

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the goals of therapy and special considerations related to hypoglycemia when managing diabetes in older adults.
  2. Identify and assess the risk of hypoglycemia from medications prescribed for diabetes management (oral agents, insulin, SGLT inhibitors) when used alone and in combination with other medications commonly prescribed for associated comorbidities in the older adult population (weight loss medications, beta blockers, ace inhibitors, antibiotics, etc.).
  3. Adjust pharmacologic agents (above) in older adults with diabetes to minimize the risk of hypoglycemia.
  4. Discuss the benefits and limitations of Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) in the management of diabetes in older adults.
  5. Develop individualized treatment plans that consider polypharmacy and hypoglycemia risks.
